There's something about the way dancers dress when they're not dancing. The layers, the slightly undone knits, the leg warmers pulled over leggings. Nothing looks particularly planned, yet somehow it all works.
It's an aesthetic Hailey Bieber knows well, and now she's bringing it to Adanola.
Launching on 15 October, the collaboration takes inspiration from Bieber's 12 years of ballet training, translating the dancer's off-duty wardrobe into a collection of soft knits, performance-inspired pieces and everyday layers.
Think less pink tutu, more ballet rehearsal in downtown New York.
Born in the ballet studio
This isn't simply a case of putting a famous face on an existing collection.
Bieber has been involved in developing the fits, fabrics and colours, drawing on the little styling tricks she picked up during her years of dance training.
Rolling down waistbands, cropping sweatshirts, cutting tights into boleros and layering pieces in unexpected ways all helped shape the collection.
It's that slightly improvised approach to getting dressed that makes the collaboration interesting. The clothes are designed to be adapted, layered and worn beyond the studio.
And considering Bieber has practically made an art form of looking effortlessly put together in leggings and an oversized jacket, the partnership makes a lot of sense.
The pieces we're watching
01 / The shawl knit bolero
Possibly our favourite piece from the early campaign imagery. Soft, slightly slouchy and designed to sit over a fitted top or sports bra. Exactly the kind of layer that makes a simple outfit feel more considered.
02 / The fold-over trousers
Low-rise, fold-over waistbands are having another moment, and we're not complaining. The chocolate brown version paired with a matching cropped top feels particularly wearable.
03 / The ribbed leg warmers
Arguably the most literal ballet reference, but also the most fun. Worn scrunched over leggings or with shorts, they bring a little nostalgia without requiring an actual dance class.
04 / The cropped layers
The vintage blue zip-through and knit pieces offer something a little different from Adanola's usual oversized sweats. We're particularly interested in how these work with wider-leg trousers and fitted leggings.
Not your typical ballet pink
The palette deserves a mention, too.
Rather than leaning heavily into traditional ballerina pink, the collection mixes dusty mauves and chalky lilacs with chocolate brown, soft whites, black and vintage blue.
It's a clever balance of feminine and practical. Pretty enough to feel different, understated enough to work with pieces already in your wardrobe.
And there's something particularly appealing about those softer shades against autumn's heavier jackets and oversized outerwear.
The Kit & Grit take
What we like most about this collaboration isn't necessarily the ballet inspiration itself. It's the idea that activewear doesn't have to look like activewear.
A bolero over a sports bra. Fold-over trousers with a structured jacket. A cropped knit thrown over something fitted.
The individual pieces are relatively simple. It's how they're worn together that makes them interesting.
That's where we think this collection gets it right. Rather than creating another matching gym set, Adanola is giving us pieces to actually style.
Will we be wearing leg warmers to the gym? Possibly not. With shorts, trainers and a great oversized jacket on a Sunday morning? Different story entirely.
